What can I expect during my first session? Therapy is a collaborative process and works best when both parties are committed to doing the work. In the first session, the therapist will ask questions to get to know you - why you are seeking counseling, your personal and professional life, your interests, and anything else you want to share. Together, you will come up with goals for future sessions.
Is there a benefit to self-pay instead of using insurance? Yes. Some clients choose not to use insurance benefits even if they have them. When you go through insurance, you will have a pre-existing condition on your record. Your therapist is required to provide a mental health diagnosis in order to bill your insurance. Some clients are uncomfortable with this. Some clients find that they are more committed to the therapeutic process when they pay out of pocket. Clients are not limited to the therapists who only take their insurance when they self-pay.
Do you provide medication? No, I am not a medical doctor. Some clients find that medication is helpful while others make progress without medication. If you would like to be evaluated for medication, you should contact your primary care physician or a psychiatrist. If you are currently taking medication, I can coordinate care with your provider.
Why Grey Street? Grey Street Counseling Center is a nod to the song written by Dave Matthews of the same name. The lyrics are personally meaningful to GSCC's founder and can be interpreted as a call to action for mental health. In addition, the color grey (gray) is symbolic. Most things in life are not black-or-white or all-or-nothing, even though we sometimes look at it that way. Grey Street is a reminder to look at the grey - the in between, the middle ground, the possibilities, the solutions, and the options - instead of in absolute terms.
